Someone asks you at a party what you do for a living. What do you say?
I am the CEO and co-founder of Patlytics, a solution that unlocks productivity gains across the patent lifecycle. Our advanced large language models and generative artificial intelligence (AI)-powered engine custom-built for intellectual property are transforming the discovery, analytics, and reporting of IP. Patlytics is the trusted partner to Fortune 500 companies, leading law firms, and enterprise innovators across invention sectors.
Talk us through a typical working day.
My routine is central to sustaining focus and productivity across my personal life and responsibilities as CEO. I start each morning with a cold plunge, and then head into the office. I coordinate individual meetings with customers and then sync with our product team to ensure that our solution is solving customers’ pain points and staying ahead of their needs. I connect with our sales and marketing teams daily to refine and expand our go-to-market strategy, clarifying how IP professionals can maximise their time, expertise, and strategic value with the help of AI.
The third key component of my typical working day involves meeting with our advisors and investors. We have assembled an incredible advisory board of IP and legal experts whose backgrounds span across industry titans such as Google, IBM, Latham & Watkins, Datadog, and Koch Companies. Their insights are invaluable to optimising business operations and accelerating our company mission.
What are you working on at the moment?
My main priority is ramping up our go-to-market efforts to include Asia and Europe. To achieve this global expansion, I’ve been focusing on growing our best-in-class team internally, and working side-by-side with our product team to rapidly deploy new solution capabilities and enhancements to our customers.
Does one big piece of work usually take priority or are you juggling multiple things?
Priorities shift as the business evolves, but my background in venture capital has shaped my consistent philosophy around fundraising. I am a firm believer that if you focus on the business, everything else follows. For me, this means prioritising customer growth and delight over allocating time towards perfecting pitch decks and materials. This unconventional fundraising approach has paid off. Patlytics experienced fundraising success in 2024, based on diligence and our customer base and their testimonials. The business will remain my top priority, and Patlytics’ fundraising momentum will naturally follow.
What is the most exciting aspect of your role and what is the most stressful?
We have reached an inflection point where AI can significantly augment and accelerate human capabilities — even within the complex and nuanced realm of IP. The opportunity for us to deliver efficiency and insights with generative AI that transform how IP professionals strategise and engage with the patent lifecycle is incredibly exciting. In the same vein, our customers are exceptionally sophisticated professionals, and we put immense pressure on ourselves to set and sustain the gold standard of ROI, quality, and security across the IP industry. This can be stressful at times, but it’s mostly exciting.
Tell us the key characteristics that make a successful IP lawyer/practitioner.
I do not have a legal background, so I spoke with more than 100 IP professionals before developing our solution. These initial conversations evolved into meaningful, lasting relationships. In fact, many of the people I connected with are now Patlytics customers. The most successful IP professionals I’ve encountered are creative, diligent, and driven.
What is the most common misconception about IP?
The assumption that IP is boring couldn’t be farther from the truth. There are some of the most brilliant and creative minds in the space. Not to mention, some of the biggest budgets are in IP. Historically, there have been negative connotations held about legal technology, but AI innovation has dismantled these premises. Over the past few years, lawyers have become very receptive to technology, and the technology is delivering meaningful value.
What or who inspires you?
My mom and dad are my biggest inspirations. They are immigrants who worked extremely hard to open doors for me and my brother. I owe my work ethic and drive to the strength they exemplified day in and day out.
If you weren’t in IP, what would you be doing?
I’ve been a venture capitalist and early-stage investor for most of my career, and the IP space is newer to me. I was previously a partner at Tribe Capital and Global Founders Capital, and an advisor for 8VC. I also held the position of chief revenue officer at Standard Metrics, a portfolio collaboration solution. My VC background strengthened my ability to quickly and strategically dig into new industries – and I’ve leveraged this skill to fully immerse myself in the IP market. I pull from my VC experience to set Patlytics’ business strategy and benchmarks as CEO, but our product development is entirely informed by customers and IP practitioners. This unique balance of expertise has been a driving force behind Patlytics’ success and market leadership.
I genuinely feel like I’ve landed my dream job at Patlytics, but if I were to completely pivot my career, I would become a professional foodie!
Any advice you would give your younger self?
You don’t have as much time as you think, and if you stay comfortable, you’ll stand still. Push yourself to view every situation as an opportunity to take action, but make sure you’re also putting in the work to inform the actions you take on your path to growth.
What is your motto in life?
“If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far do it together.” I am so proud of what the Patlytics team has accomplished over the past year, and our group is uniquely positioned to succeed in vertical AI, while providing the level of depth and sophistication that patent professionals demand. Patlytics’ culture has a strong bias towards action, and we’re always analysing how we can deliver more value and outcomes for our customers.
