Google and GoDaddy among new gTLDs applicants

The application period for new gTLDs closed this week, and Icann revealed that there will be at least 1900 applications. The number and names of the strings applied for will be revealed on June 13. But some applicants have already started to reveal their plans, including Google and GoDaddy

Here’s a summary of this week’s announcements:

Google said it has applied for gTLDs including .google, .docs, .youtube and .lol. AdAge reported that the company is seeking more than 50 gTLDs.

Go Daddy is applying for .home and .casa in addition to its own brand, according to Domain Name Wire.

Radix Registry, owned by Directi Group, said it had applied for 31 new gTLDs, all for generic words: .web, .shop, .bank, .law, .music, .news, .blog, .movie, .baby, .store, .doctor, .hotel, .play, .home, .site, .website, .click, .online, .one, .ping, .space, .world, .press, .chat, .city, .deals, .insurance, .loans, .app, .host, .hosting. There are likely to be competing applications for some of these strings.

Web.com has also applied to register .web. According to United Domains, this gTLD has the most pre-registrations, with over 100,000 at 0900 BST on Friday.

Momentous Corp has applied for four gTLDs for generic words: .design, .style, .rip and .sucks according to The Domains blog. Dot-sucks is “intended to provide a medium for sharing opinions and encouraging debate” according to the company. The application might be opposed by trade mark owners.

Cloudnames has applied to own .cloud and .global.

In addition, ARI Registry Services said it is providing back-office services to 161 applications, comprising 85 generic, 70 brand and six geographic terms.

Thetoplevel.com is a website that maintains a regularly updated list of new gTLDs that have been announced.

At time of writing, it had 155 new gTLD applications recorded, meaning that most of the applications still remain secret.
