A specialized Intellectual Property Department has been established in Jordan to fight IP crimes. The new department will empower its officers to take action against IP criminals. It will operate within the Criminal Investigation Department. The aim of the department is to bring down criminal activities relating to intellectual property, such as counterfeiting and piracy in the internal market.
Jordan is a member of numerous WIPO treaties. The country has developed a number of progressive IP laws. Therefore, incorporation of the new department may be seen as a right step in the direction of strengthening the country's existing IP regime. Like all other developed IP legal systems, the creation of criminal sanctions against IP crimes may contain vigilant market monitoring, appropriate investigation and prompt action against infringers. Thus, it is expected that the new department may harmonize the country's criminal provisions that are necessary to guarantee complete effectiveness of laws on the protection of IP rights.
The Directorate of General Security of Jordan, under which the new department has been set up, is also working on its organizational set up and scope of legal provisions. These are expected to be available soon.
