MIP awards winners revealed

Awards were presented to winners in 46 categories at MIP's second annual IP awards dinner at Claridge's in London last night

Awards were presented to winners in 46 categories at MIP's second annual IP awards dinner at Claridge's in London last night.

Baker & McKenzie received two accolades – for leading firm in Russia and leading foreign firm in China.

The award for leading law firm in Europe went to Bird & Bird. Gevers & Partners won an award for trade mark filing in Europe, and Zacco won an award for patent filing.

Awards were made to the leading firms in 35 jurisdictions, with two awards in Canada and the UK and four in the US.

In addition, the award for IP case of the year was presented to US firms Sidley Austin and Skadden, who acted for eBay in its dispute with MercExchange, which went to the US Supreme Court.

The in-house team of the year award was presented to Google and the outstanding achievement award to Tove Graulund, formerly head of IP at Arla Foods and chair of trade mark owners' organization MARQUES.

MIP researchers spent more than five months researching the awards, which followed MIP's 11th annual world IP survey, published earlier this year.

During the research process, they contacted more than 2,000 people directly and carried out some 500 interviews by email, telephone and face-to-face.

Based on the research for the survey, shortlists for the firm of the year were drawn up in the 35 biggest jurisdictions. The winners were selected from these shortlists.

The awards recognize achievement in IP work over the past year, whether in prosecution, litigation, licensing or other work.

More than 250 people attended the dinner and awards presentation, with guests coming from as far afield as Argentina, Australia, Chile and Japan.

MIP subscribers can read the full list of winners here. Non-subscribers can take out a free trial here.

A full report of the evening, including photographs of the winners, will appear in the April issue of MIP.
